Timing depends on the set-piece difficulty, language foundation and competition date. A sound sequence is selection and understanding first, then pronunciation, pace, expression and mock performance. A first competition usually works best in the language where the child can understand and express most comfortably, while meeting class and set-piece requirements. No language is inherently better; the priority is a confident, well-understood performance.
No. Memorisation is only a base. Learners also need to understand the text and work on pronunciation, pauses, emphasis, eye contact and stage presence. Short sections, recordings and mock performance make specific feedback possible.
One-to-one private tuition focuses squarely on a student's strengths and weaknesses, targeting their delivery technique and attending to fine detail, so the goals of recitation training are reached far more quickly.
A complete teaching cycle for one piece is normally 12 lessons. We recommend enrolling in at least 8 lessons.
For students learning recitation and entering competitions for the first time, we recommend choosing the language they know best or enjoy most. This lets them relax and truly enjoy recitation in lessons, greatly reduces the nerves that come with a first competition, and allows them to perform freely, so that they gradually fall in love with recitation. Once a student has gained a sense of achievement and confidence, they can slowly branch out into other languages and explore how delivery differs from one language to another. The right mindset for competition is one of practice and gathering experience, so as long as there is ample preparation time, entering several pieces is perfectly fine. However, if practice time is short and the student is still relatively inexperienced, taking on too many pieces means none of them receives proper attention.
At home, parents can encourage their child to listen to the recordings and keep practising. It also helps to encourage children to perform at family gatherings, school activities or the playground, or to enter competitions run by different organisations, which quickly builds confidence and a real appetite for performing.
We do not recommend memorising the piece too early. After the first lesson, students should imitate and practise from the tutor's full recording of the standard pronunciation; reviewing or reciting the piece daily from that point achieves far more with less effort.
Inter-school speech festivals normally require students to compete in school uniform. For other competitions, unless there are specific rules, neat and presentable clothing with tidy grooming is all that is needed.
We teach eye contact and gestures where appropriate, depending on the demands of the piece and the student's year group; generally, the higher the year group, the fewer the gestures. (The number of gestures and the requirements vary according to each competition's rules.)
